I’m making this small and simple tutorial for the How u model dem shapes thread over at Polycount. This is in no way the be all and end all of “surface holes” (or whatever other uses you might give to this technique, like just making circle holes or depressions on surfaces), but just the way I do it, which I learnt myself from somewhere else (I’d post the link if I could remember).

Now, as for the tutorial itself. I actually made two. These are the two ways I always do it. The first tutorial is more complex and depending on what you want to do, the result might not be what you are looking for.

First tutorial:

1. Start with a simple plane with two Length and Width segments. Then convert it to Editable Poly.
2. Go into Vertex Mode (shortcut: Key 1) Â and select the vertex in the middle. Select the Chamfer option under Edit Vertices and make it the size you want. You can always make it a random big size.
3. Go into Edge Mode (shortcut: Key 2) Â and select the new edges you made. Connect them like in the picture and then change back to Vertex Mode and connect (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+E)the new vertices to the corners of the original plane.
4. After you’ve done this, select all the vertices in the middle except for the one in the exact center, and go to Modifier List > Spherify. Leave it at 100% and then convert the mesh to Editable Poly again (we are not touching Spherify anymore) or just press Collapse To (right button on top of the Spherify modifier).
5. Go into Polygon Mode (shortcut: Key 4) and select the polygons making the circle. Either use Extrude or Bevel and just make a hole inwards. You can just leave the bottom with a surface or you can leave a hole (Step 6) and just mirror the mesh to have a hole like many silencers do.

After that just copy & paste the same mesh using the Snap Toggle tool and align the circles in the pattern you want. I found the one on the right to be more common, but either would work.
Once you have it all ready, just attach all the meshes together and go into Vertex Mode, select all vertices and weld them together.
Now, there’s a problem with this, and it’s that the diagonal edges will make your shape look fairly ugly, so to fix that you would need to delete those edges and connect them like this, which can be quite time consuming and just plain boring:

The last step is to make the whole mesh bigger and with more holes, attach everything together, bend the model and add some TurboSmooth.

Therefore, this could be used more to create circles on surfaces that don’t bend, unless you got a lot of free time!.

Second Tutorial:

This method is the one I used for the silencer on my last WIP. Now, for this method I first decided how many depressions I wanted in the shape. In this case, it’s 6 rows of 3 circles. So for each row I will use one edge, and then have one edge on each side so the cylinder has a cleaner shape (but this also depends on how many space you have, how big you want the circles, how many rows you have, etc…).

1. Make a cylinder and convert it to Editable Poly.
2. Add as many edges as you might need. I have 3 circles per row so I have 6 edges (1 edge in between each circle row).
3. I also added some control edges so the cylinder doesn’t curve on those edges. You would also need to add the extra details that a silencer has, but this is not the tutorial for that.
4. Once you’ve done this, select the vertices where you want the circles to be (in my case, 1 every two rows and every two columns). Finally chamfer them the size you want for your circles.
5 & 6. This part depends completely on the shape you want. Select the newly created polygons and bevel them inwards. Do this a few times to also create control edges (again, depending on the shape you want) and you are done.

Finally make it all one smoothing group (or leave the bottoms as another group, depending on what shape you’re looking for), throw some TurboSmooth into it (you can also make one TurboSmooth based on the smoothing groups and then another TurboSmooth based on material to get a different result. It’s like making extra control edges, basically). Here are the results of the 5th and 6th examples.

Hopefully this tutorial can be of some help for anyone out there. Please post on the comments area if you want to say something about this or have some critics.
